Virginia's Geographic Regions for Geneaogical Research

Eastern Shore--small peninsula south of the Maryland line. Includes
Accomack and Northampton Counties


Tidewater--the coastal plain west and inland from the Chesapeake Bay to the Fall Line.
It runs north to south through Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Richmond and Petersburg

Piedmont--rolling area of rich farmland from the Tidewater
to the Blue Ridge Mountains
.


The Valley--the area between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny
Mountains. The Shenandoah Valley area includes Augusta, Rockingham,
Page, Shenandoah, Warren, Frederick, Clarke, Jefferson, and Berkeley
counties.


Western Virginia--west of Roanoke and south of the Shenandoah Valley.

Northern Neck--South of the Potomac River to the Rappahannock River.
East of Prince William and Stafford counties.


North Peninsula--south of the Rappahannock River and north of the York River.

The Peninsula--site of the earliest settlements. Located between the York and James Rivers.

Southside--area south of the James River
